Bringing our community together

An evening with Alastair Campbell and William Ellis pupils

On Thursday 23rd October we proudly hosted the first event under our new name at the school – and what an evening it was.

More than 140 alumni, parents, and supporters joined us for a thought-provoking evening with Alastair Campbell in conversation with current William Ellis pupils. The discussion left everyone with a renewed sense of that most essential ingredient — hope. Our students’ empathy, humour, and tenacity offered a refreshing contrast to the challenges dominating today’s global headlines, reminding us all what’s possible.

We’re delighted to share highlights from the evening below — featuring our brilliant pupils, interviews with attendees, and photos capturing the warmth and energy that filled the room.

The importance of community

Our mission is to be a resource for everyone in the William Ellis community — building connections, bringing people together, and opening up opportunities for our pupils and young people across Camden. William Ellis holds a special place in the hearts of so many. Our vision involves bringing this community together — to celebrate the school, strengthen our connections, and create opportunities for the pupils of today and tomorrow. WES alum Tom Kihl spoke about this beautifully in a review of the evening in his Camdenist journal. Seeing that spirit in action at our first event was inspiring, and we look forward to building on this momentum with you at future gatherings.

As Alastair’s book title asked — “But What Can I Do?” — the answer, we believe, is: plenty. There are many ways each of us can contribute to strengthening this community and advancing our mission. Here are a few:

Join the Rather Use Than Fame Club:

Our Rather Use Than Fame Club is a new regular giving initiative for supporters who want to help deepen the impact of our work. Inspired by the school motto, it brings our community together to create opportunities that enable today’s pupils to grow into adults leading purposeful, fulfilling lives.

Learn more about the club here.

Help us grow our alumni network:

Our alumni community is growing stronger — and we’d love your help to keep that momentum going. Please encourage your school friends to sign up and get involved.

Share the alumni network page here to help us reach even more of the William Ellis family.

Open doors for current pupils:

We’re supporting the school’s careers team by seeking opportunities for workplace visits, mock interviews, and work experience — as well as cultural and creative experiences for our pupils. If you or your organisation can help, we’d love to hear from you.

Key dates for 2026:

Monday 2nd March 2026 – Mock Interviews
We’re looking for up to 10 volunteers to interview Year 10 students from 9am to 1pm.

Monday 29th June – Friday 3rd July 2026 – Work Experience Week
Can you offer a placement to a William Ellis pupil? Or connect us with organisations that could?
