The Syd Aldridge Award
Since 2024 we have provided funding to the school in the form of prizes to celebrate the achievements of students in Year 11. There is also a single award, known as the Syd Aldridge award, of a larger nature which is awarded each year to the student who has shown the most flair and aptitude across STEM subjects.
Previous recipients of the award are:
2025 Theo Irving
2024 Felix Aitman Bevan
About Syd Aldridge
Syd Aldridge attended William Ellis from 1951-56 and held many fond memories of teachers and students that he carried with him for over seventy years. His experiences of learning Physics and Chemistry within the school were particularly formative and helped inspire a life-long love of the sciences and a highly successful career working within scientific industries.
Having left school at 16 at the behest of his father, Syd completed his A-Levels at evening school and qualified in metallurgy from Sir John Cass College, which later became the London Metropolitan University. Syd emigrated to Canada in 1963 where he spent fourteen years in research at Chalk River. He then worked in research for Atomic Energy of Canada before becoming the General Manager of a company that manufactured zirconium alloy fuel channels for the CANDU nuclear reactors. Syd eventually rose to be President and CEO for the final twelve years of his career.
Syd became a great friend to the Trust and a generous donation led to the establishment of this award as well as being used to;
Redevelop one of our science classrooms entirely and replace seating across all science classrooms.
Provide an IT suite within Room 8
Allow the Trust to make its £200,000 pledge towards the playground redevelopment.
Fund the initial salary of our Director and increase our general funding to the school
More about Syd
All at the Trust were saddened by Syd’s passing in early 2026. Syd was living in Ottawa, Canada and continued to enjoy English staples such as crumpets bought weekly from the local British food store. All at the William Ellis Trust are continually grateful for his support to the school and the Trust. This support continues to shape the work we are able to do, and so his legacy lives on.

Like many alumni, Syd provided an example of living a life that is of great use to the world without seeking fame – and of how our memories of our formative educational years live on with us no matter how far away we may move from our roots.
To the right is an award given to Syd for outstanding accomplishments within his chosen scientific field - a passion that was first ignited during his time at William Ellis some sixty years prior to the award being given.
Thank you Syd for your generosity of spirit and money, and for helping lay a platform to support pupils of today, and of days yet to come.
